Research Experience/Scholarly Activity

Scholarly Activity

The Orthopedic Surgery Program is continuing its progress with scholarly activity. Our program is supporting our mission and aims with the scholarly activities that have shown an increase in resident PubMed numbers, ex. last 2019-20 academic year 4 residents accomplished pub meds, 1 non pub med, and we have 15 residents participate in QI studies, research activities, all 15 residents submitted posters or presentations at either national, regional, or local conferences, and two residents in an academic position. Our graduating resident 2020 Logan Cooper DO will be in a future book chapter later 2020 on total hip ASI approach with his future Fellowship Director Sonny Ball M.D.

The sponsoring institution(SI), Kansas City University just hired a research coordinator for residents and faculty Suporn Sukpraprut-Bratten Phd.

We continue have faculty with PMID's 5, and 3 peer reviewed non PubMed., also a grant with JBJS for journal clubs was approved. We have national, regional, local presentations by 8 faculty. July 2020 we were approved for CME Grand rounds at St Mary’s Hospital and 2 faculty have spoken in July 2020, and all faculty will be presenting this academic year; followed with a Ortho Grand round day resident and faculty in June 2021. 5 Faculty continue to be on national leadership committees with the AOAO (American Osteopathic Academy Orthopaedic Surgery), 1with ACGME Milestone 2.0, 1 editorial reviewer with American Journal Sports Medicine and Journal Arthroscopy, 1 with Arthroscopy Association North America research committee member, 2 with AO North America trauma courses, 1 with Board of Healing Arts Kansas. During the COVID shutdown of many hospitals all faculty and most residents have helped develop orthopaedic teaching modules for Truman Medical Center Family Medicine Department, for the national Student American Osteopathic Association Orthopaedics, and for the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific Western University of Health Sciences.

We continue to develop faculty skills, knowledge, and understanding of all areas of scholarly activity through the SI and with Matthew Daggett DO our research orthopaedic faculty.

Quality improvement studies are ongoing within our hospitals, and 8 faculty participate in those. The core faculty are also participating in the development of regional orthopaedic boot camps. All core faculty have also been participating on developing zoom virtual interviews for the 2020-21 season. Core faculty have assisted with the development of a disaster plan for the base hospital which was implemented for COVID-19 but applies to any disaster.

The hospital administration also is supportive and will fund any PubMed articles. Scholarly activity includes several areas not just PubMed, and on those others we continue to show steady improvement.
