Lactation Support
How you feed your baby is one of the most personal choices you will make when your newborn arrives. Because many mothers want to breastfeed, but find it challenging, The Birthing Center at St. Mary’s Medical Center offers a free Lactation Support Program. The program helps families better understand infant nursing patterns, proper feeding techniques, problem solving and normal growth and maturation patterns specific to breastfeeding. If you have questions or concerns regarding breastfeeding, you may request a private consultation from the Lactation Support Program. There is no charge for this service. Here are some indications you may need a lactation consultation.
Infant
- Infant not nursing well within 24 hours
- Neonatal intensive care infant
- Infant with oral/facial anomalies
- Multiple births
- Infant requiring supplementation for medical reasons
- Infant not gaining weight
Mother
- History of breast surgery
- History of unsuccessful breastfeeding
- Maternal illness or disease
- Flat or inverted nipples
- Nipple trauma from nursing
