Radiation Oncology

St. Mary's Medical Center's Radiation Oncology Department is a long established hospital-based program dedicated to providing radiation therapy techniques in a private clinic setting.

Our certified physicians, nurses and radiation therapists offer a treatment program tailored to each patient's specific needs. Our goal is to make every step of treatment easy to understand and as comfortable as possible.

Our services include:

  • Three-dimensional planning
  • Advanced techniques in specialty programs which minimize side effects
  • Educational and nutritional support tailored to each patient.

What is Radiation Therapy?
Radiation therapy is one of the most common treatments for cancer and is used in more than half of all cancer cases. Radiation uses a stream of high-energy particles to destroy or damage cancer cells. Thousands of people become cancer-free after receiving treatments alone or in combination with surgery chemotherapy.

Treatment Goals
Radiation therapy can be utilized for many purposes. The goals of a patient's treatment may be:

  • Curing cancer
  • Killing remaining cancer cells in the treatment area after chemotherapy or surgery
  • Controlling cancer for a period of time
  • Reducing the symptoms of cancer, such as pain
  • Improving quality of life.

Arranging a Consultation Appointment
Before we treat your cancer it is important for us to understand each of our patients as a whole person. After a primary care physician has referred a patient to St. Mary's Radiation Oncology, a consultation appointment will be scheduled. This appointment will give the patient and their family the opportunity to meet with the radiation oncologist and nurse to discuss options for treatment. An individualized treatment plan will then be developed based on the patient's specific needs.

Office Hours
The Radiation Oncology Department is open from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. After hours, weekends and holidays, an answering service will address your questions and concerns. Our office number is 816-655-5592.
