One of the most important steps in becoming a doctor is residency. The
residency programs at St. Mary’s Medical Center provide a dynamic
learning environment that emphasizes the fundamentals of patient care
by developing both medical and interpersonal skills.
St. Mary’s Medical Center houses two surgery residency programs,
General Surgery and Orthopedics, that provide a supportive and collaborative
environment. The programs are designed to build confidence, independence,
and professionalism ensuring patients will receive the highest in quality care.
These residency programs provide hands-on learning consisting of practical
doctoring skills such as ordering and interpreting tests, making diagnoses,
performing surgeries, etc. Additionally, the program directors help coach
and build decision-making techniques, leadership skills, and burnout prevention.
Both of St. Mary's Medial Center's five-year residency programs
prepare each resident to pass the Boards and are accredited by the
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), sponsored by the Kansas City University Graduate Medical Education Consortium.
