St. Mary's Stroke Center Earns Advanced Certification
The Stroke Center at St. Mary’s Medical Center has earned the Gold
Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission as an Advanced Primary Stroke
Center. The certification follows a rigorous on-site review from the Joint
Commission last month.
The recognition from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American
Stroke Association shows St. Mary’s is among an elite group of providers
focused on complex stroke care. Centers earning the seal of approval are
recognized as industry leaders.
Breast Center Accreditation
The Breast Center at St. Mary’s Medical Center has earned accreditation
by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. Accreditation
by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed
to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a
rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.
Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award
St. Mary’s Medical Center has earned the Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke
Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association.
The award recognizes St. Mary’s commitment and success in implementing
a higher standard of care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment
according to nationally accepted guidelines.
The Get With The Guidelines–Stroke program helps St. Mary’s
staff develop and implement acute and secondary prevention guideline processes
to improve patient care and outcomes. The program ensures the care provided
to stroke patients is aligned with the most current, science-based guidelines.
The quick and efficient use of guideline procedures can improve the quality
of care for stroke patients and may reduce disability and save lives.
To earn the award, hospitals must show they are adhering to the guidelines
for a designated period of time.
National Excellence in Healthcare Awards
St. Mary's Medical Center has earned prestigious honors in Professional
Research Consultants’ (PRC) 2011 National Excellence in Healthcare
Awards. PRC presented Five-Star Patient Perception Awards to the 3 West
medical/surgical unit and the Birthing Center at St. Mary’s.
Five-Star Patient Perception Awards are awarded to hospital service lines
that scored in the top 10 percent nationally in 2011 based on the percentage
of patients who rated the units as “Excellent” for Overall
Quality of Care questions.
Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
The Breast Center at St. Mary's Medical Center has been designated
as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology
(ACR). This prestigious designation means the Breast Center at St. Mary's
has earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy and
breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy).
The Center of Excellence designation was awarded after St. Mary's undertook
an extensive evaluation process, which included a thorough peer-review
by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in
the field. The evaluation determined that St. Mary's has achieved
high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility
equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.
Chest Pain Center Accreditation
St. Mary's Medical Center has earned Chest Pain Center Accreditation
from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. The accreditation proves St. Mary's
works seamlessly with area emergency medical services to ensure patients
get the treatment they need during the critical early stages of a heart
attack. As an Accredited Chest Pain Center, St. Mary' ensures patients
who come to the Emergency Department with chest pain or discomfort are
given the immediate treatment necessary to avoid as much heart damage
as possible. Protocol-based procedures developed by leading experts in
cardiac care are part of St. Joseph's overall cardiac care services.
Premiere Award for Quality
St. Mary’s Medical Center was recognized by the Premier Inc., Health
Care Alliance as a winner of the Premier Award for Quality in all clinical
areas measured. Participating hospitals report quality data to Premier
Inc., which then submits it to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid
Services (CMS) for five high-volume inpatient conditions. These are:
- Heart attack (AMI)
- Heart failure
- Pneumonia
- Hip and knee replacement.
Accreditation Awarded by the American College of Radiology
St. Mary’s Medical Center earned a three-year accreditation in magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) of the head, spine and musculoskeletal system,
and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for adhering to high quality
standards. To receive accreditation, a facility must undergo a peer review
evaluation conducted by board-certified physicians.
St. Mary’s Medical Center Ranked Among Top 30 in Nation by Joint
Commission
The Joint Commission scored St. Mary’s Medical Center in the top
30 hospitals across Missouri and the nation in terms of quality and safety.
Each quarter the Joint Commission assesses risk at accredited hospitals
using a tool called the Strategic Surveillance (S3). S3 scores are determined
for each hospital by reviewing core measures, past citations, MSDRGs,
complication and mortality rates and patient satisfaction scores. The
lower the S3 score, the better a hospital’s performance. For fourth
quarter 2009, St. Mary’s cumulative S3 score was 93, placing them
in the top 30.
